Beste vrienden en collega’s,

In 2015 behandelde Stefan Collini bij de opening van het academisch jaar van de Universiteit Leiden de vraag “Who does the university belong to?” Hij stelde daarin de open toekomst centraal: de universiteit behoort niet aan ons, maar aan de toekomst. Daarom is het van cruciaal belang dat de doeleinden van universiteiten niet ondergeschikt worden aan de politieke, sociale, of economische agenda van welke maatschappelijke groepering dan ook. Want als dat gebeurt verliest de universiteit haar unieke karakter: de plek waar altijd de volgende vraag kan worden gesteld en waar geen enkele vraag tot zwijgen wordt gebracht. Daarom is verdediging van de institutionele autonomie van de universiteit, in samenhang met de ontwikkeling van nieuwe vormen van academische vrijheid, van zo’n groot belang.

Dat was de gedachte achter de actie om het Fonds Wetenschappers in Verdrukking ter gelegenheid van mijn afscheidscollege te versterken. En met elkaar hebben we maar liefst € 6.691,80 opgehaald ter ondersteuning van wetenschappers in verdrukking. Dat is een bijzonder indrukwekkend resultaat, waarmee we het signaal hebben afgegeven dat de kritische en onafhankelijke stem van gewetensvolle kennis gehoord en beschermd moet worden.

Dear friends and colleagues,

In 2015, at the opening of our academic year, Stefan Collini addressed the question "Who does the university belong to?". In it, he posed the open future: the university does not belong to us, but to the future. Therefore, it is crucial that the purposes of the university not become subordinate to the political, social, or economic agenda of any social group. Because when that happens, the university loses its unique character: the place where the next question can always be asked and where no question is silenced. This is why defense of the institutional autonomy of the university, in conjunction with the development of new forms of academic freedom, is of such great importance.

That was the idea behind the action to donate to the Scholars at Risk Fund on the occasion of my farewell lecture. And together we raised no less than €6,691.80 in support of scientists and scholars facing oppression. That is a particularly impressive result, sending the signal that the critical and independent voice of conscientious knowledge must be heard and protected.
