Afscheid Mark Rutgers - Steun Wetenschappers voor Wetenschappers

Beste vrienden en collega's,

Op 1 maart neem ik afscheid als decaan. In plaats van een cadeau, wil ik jullie vragen om bij te dragen aan de ondersteuning van wetenschappers in verdrukking. Daarom vraag ik jullie om een donatie aan Wetenschappers voor Wetenschappers Leiden te overwegen.

Het is voor mij een mooi afscheidscadeau om gezamenlijk de helpende hand te bieden aan collega-wetenschappers die moeten vrezen voor hun vrijheid, of zelfs hun leven. In een tijd waarin autocratieën oprukken, oorlog zorgt voor vreselijke verwoesting in de wereld en wetenschap steeds vaker onder vuur ligt—zelfs in Nederland—kunnen wij hier in Leiden nog steeds een veilige haven bieden. Een plek waar bedreigde wetenschappers hun werk kunnen voortzetten en waar we academische vrijheid als een opdracht zien.

De geschiedenis leert ons immers hoe belangrijk dit is. In Leiden herdenken we daarom ook jaarlijks de rede die professor Cleveringa uitsprak tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De traditie van solidariteit en bescherming mogen we zeker niet laten verdwijnen. Wetenschap bloeit in vrijheid, en wanneer die vrijheid bedreigd wordt, is het onze verantwoordelijkheid om daarvoor op te komen.

In het huidige tijdsgewricht moet juist de wetenschap - zeker de geesteswetenschappen - een tegenwicht bieden aan angst voor ‘de ander’, oorlogszucht en onderdrukking. Wetenschap dient bij te dragen aan zelfkennis en wederzijds begrip, tolerantie en onderling respect: dat is een voorwaarde voor vreedzaam samenleven. Onze steun voor wetenschappers die hun werk niet in vrijheid kunnen doen, was, is en blijft nodig. Ik hoop dat jullie dit mooie doel willen helpen ondersteunen!

Dear friends and colleagues,

On 1 March, I will be stepping down as Dean. Instead of a gift, I would like to ask you to contribute to supporting scholars who are living under oppression. May I therefore request that you consider making a donation to Scholars for Scholars Leiden?

It would be a most meaningful leaving gift for me, if we could all extend a helping hand to fellow academics who fear for their freedom, or even their lives. At a time when autocracies are on the rise, wars are causing terrible devastation around the world and scholarship is increasingly under threat – even in the Netherlands – we can still provide a sanctuary here in Leiden; a place where at-risk scholars can continue their work, and where we uphold academic freedom as a fundamental duty.

We have learned from history just how important this is. In Leiden we therefore commemorate each year the speech given by Professor Cleveringa during the Second World War. We must not allow this tradition of solidarity and protection to fade. Scholarship flourishes in freedom, and when that freedom is threatened, it is our responsibility to stand up for it.

At this time, scholarship – especially the humanities – is more crucial than ever, and must serve as a counterforce to fear of ‘the other’, to war-mongering and to oppression. Scholarship should foster self-knowledge and understanding of one another, tolerance and mutual respect: essential foundations for peaceful coexistence. Our support for scholars who are unable to do their work in freedom has always been and continues to be needed. I hope you would like to support this excellent cause!
