Support the Femicide Monitor and help combat femicide!
A woman is murdered every eight days in the Netherlands. Marieke Liem, professor of Security and Interventions at Leiden University, is working on the Femicide Monitor, a public database on femicide in the Netherlands. Femicide is when women are killed because of their gender. More research is vital to protect women in the future.
‘With the Femicide Monitor, we want to create a public femicide database that tracks all women murdered in the Netherlands. We will base this on official police data and legal records. The infrastructure is in place and now it is a matter of filling it with the cases from the past decade and keeping track of new ones. The sooner we can offer key insights, the better.' Prof.dr. Project ambassadorHuri Sahin, mayor of Rijswijk, is committed to being an ambassador for the Femicide Monitor. 'It is crucial to have scientific material to take the right measures. You need both science and governance to be effective. Femicide is a social problem. Realising the Femicide Monitor helps me and other mayors to take the right steps.'Start Femicide MonitorFinancial support from donors is crucial for establishing and developing the Femicide Monitor. Professor Liem says, "We hope to raise the initial amount of €15,000 by the end of the year, so we can begin the first phase of the Femicide Monitor in early 2025. The monitor will eventually contain data on all femicides over the past 10 years in the Netherlands. This means that around 400 cases will be studied and further analysed. To do this, we aim to hire a researcher—a PhD candidate—who will work alongside one student assistant to build the monitor. This team is essential for gathering the data, analysing it, maintaining the database, and identifying key warning signs. The ultimate goal is to reduce femicides and promote a safer society."

Ik vond laatst mijn notitieboekje uit 1990 toen ik de eerste keer de Westelijke Jordaanoever bezocht. Er is sindsdien weinig veranderd; het is alleen erger geworden. Veel erger. Een van de zaken die mij toen al aangreep was de manier waarop het hoger onderwijs van de Palestijnen werd belemmerd. Dat gebeurde doordat Palestijnse studenten iedere dag maar weer moesten afwachten of ze tijdig door de roadblocks kwamen, of doordat de universiteiten voor de zoveelste keer wekenlang werden gesloten. In Gaza is die belemmering nog radicaler, want daar zijn universiteiten kapot gebombardeerd. Jonge mensen onthouden van hoger onderwijs betekent dat zij iets tekortkomen dat ze later niet meer kunnen inhalen: de tijd tussen je 18e en 25e is cruciaal om een basis te leggen voor de rest van je leven. Met een gevoel van machteloosheid heb ik de vernietiging van de samenleving in Gaza aangezien. Als hoogleraar aan een vooraanstaande universiteit wil ik een steentje bijdragen, hoe klein ook.. Door middel van deze crowdfunding, voor een masterstudent of wetenschapper in verdrukking. Mijn doel is om zo zoveel mogelijk geld in te zamelen. Dit jaar word ik 60. Een leeftijd waarbij ik terugkijk op de vele dierbaren die ik in al die jaren heb leren kennen. Daarom wil ik iedereen vragen om dit samen met mij te vieren door een donatie te doen aan dit fonds. Recently, I found my notebook from 1990, when I first visited the West Bank. Since then, little has changed; it has only gotten worse. Much worse. One of the things that struck me back then was the way higher education for Palestinians was obstructed. This happened because Palestinian students had to wait every day to see if they could get through the roadblocks on time, or because the universities were closed for weeks on end yet again. In Gaza, this obstruction is even more radical, as universities there have been bombed to ruins. Depriving young people of higher education means they miss out on something they cannot make up for later: the time between ages 18 and 25 is crucial for laying the foundation for the rest of their lives. With a feeling of helplessness, I have watched the destruction of society in Gaza. As a professor at a prestigious university, I want to contribute, however small. Through this crowdfunding effort, I aim to support a master’s student or scholar in distress. My goal is to raise as much money as possible. This year I turn 60, an age at which I reflect on the many dear people I have come to know over the years. €6,761 Raised (128%) Dear friends and colleagues, On the occasion of my farewell lecture on March 1, 2024, I would like to ask you to donate generously to support scholars and scientists who are persecuted or silenced by the bodies in power in their country. We are witnessing the rise of autocratic regimes in many regions of the world. Each of these dislikes critical voices, be they from journalists, artists, scholars or scientists. At the same time, universities and schools are being devastated in wars in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. At this very moment, with horrible wars going on, scholars are facing suppression in different parts of the world. Now more that ever, it is important to help them under these difficult circumstances. Supporting independent thinkers and writers requires more than only aiding them from a humanitarian perspective. It is an essential form of solidarity for a more just, free, inclusive and equitable society. From my point of view, such support is a contribution to fighting re-emerging forms of racism, antisemitism and other kinds of discrimination. For such situations, Leiden University Fund (LUF) has a special Fund: Scholars at Risk. It enables the university to give these scholars a temporary safe haven. This Fund has already provided support to scholars from Turkey, Russia, Lebanon, Syria, as well as other countries, and has given them the opportunity to restart their lives and work at Leiden University. To kick-off this crowdfunding initiative, which aims to give a new boost to the Scholars at Risk Fund, we already have a donation of one thousand euros. So let us multiply this! Voor mij is het een bijdrage aan de strijd tegen de opkomende vormen van racisme, antisemitisme en andere vormen van discriminatie. Het Leids Universiteits Fonds (LUF) heeft hiervoor een speciaal fonds ingesteld: Wetenschappers in Verdrukking. Het stelt de universiteit in staat om deze wetenschappers tijdelijk een veilig thuis te bieden. €3,050 Raised (1219%) Eind augustus zal Henk met pensioen gaan en daarmee zijn functie bij het Leids Universiteits Fonds neerleggen. Henk heeft aangegeven dat hij voor zijn afscheid geen cadeau wil ontvangen maar mensen de gelegenheid wil geven om een donatie te doen aan een onderzoek dat hij een warm hart toedraagt namelijk ‘Boa’s in Congo’.
